Message to mothers: San San knows breast (16/1/2006)

Message to mothers: San San knows breast                       16/1/2006  South China Morning Post

A health concern group is counting on the image of windsurfer Lee Lai-shan as a sporty, fit mother to push the message that breastfeeding is good for newborns.

The Olympic gold medalist, known as San San, has been appointed breastfeeding ambassador for the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Hong Kong Association, a global campaign conceived by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund.

San San yesterday told a group of parents that her determination to breastfeed stemmed from her mother.

"It was a bit difficult for the first time as I wasn't sure how to do it properly," she said. "But it gives me a warm feeling when I feed Hilary. Our bodies are in touch and it seems like we become one."

"My mother breastfed me, and many of my friends do the same too," the windsurfing ace said. "I'm a perfectionist, and after reading information from the internet, I know it's good, and with no harm, to breastfeed."

She admitted she was a bit nervous when feeding Hilary the first few times, worrying that her daughter would not be getting enough food.

But she thanked her husband, Sam Wong Tak-sum, and family for supporting her. "Sam accompanied me even when I needed to feed at midnight… and I breastfeed in the living room even when other family members and kids are around, unless there are some guests or other men."

"People say I regained my good body shape very quickly after giving birth, and this should be related to breastfeeding,"she chuckled.

"And don't treat it as a weird thing. It's very natural." (Reporter: Paggie Leung)
